My passion for entrepreneurship began very early on in my life. Constantly pushing the boundaries of success and innovation, every venture that I embark on is a reflection of my ambition and drive to persevere in the face of adversity.
For as long as I can remember, I have been insatiably curious. Through curiosity and experimentation, I developed a finesse for building businesses with experiences in diverse industries. Today, I am proud to have turned some of my passions into a reality, currently standing as the Founder of Digitally.Asia Group, Cause Effect, Geek Fam & Geek Events, Hostler Asia, LKK Wealth Management, Alhamra Games and Business Director at Rise Advisory, Manulife.
One thing I’m always asked is,
"How did you get started in all of this?"
I kick-started my career as an agent with Hong Leong Assurance, quickly rising up the ranks, I soon became the Youngest Record Breaker in the financial planning industry, climbing the ladder to become a Senior District Director.
However, I was still young and my days of wanting to explore every opportunity had yet to end. Delving into a wide range of businesses, I began to capitalise on my entrepreneurial aptitude, extending a hand into life insurance, financial services, mortgage loans and F&B. After a couple of years of trial and error, I eventually made my foray into the digital world.
This then led to the inception of Cause Effect in July of 2016. I believed that the reach of traditional marketing was beginning to fade and a business in a modern economy needs digital marketing to be able to compete in a fast-paced era. Cause Effect has in its time served over 200 clients, seeing a compounded growth of 50% or more every year since its establishment.
Holding a rather unconventional vision for the future, I believe that success lies in full spectrum thinking as well as endlessly experimenting in order to invent. This vision led to the growth of Cause Effect and in 2020 I partnered with another award-winning agency, SocialGrooves.com. This ultimately led to the inception of Digitally.Asia Group; a modern-day digital ally that serves as a one-stop avenue towards solving digital needs in Asia.
I am a firm believer in following your passions and transforming them into a reality that takes you to the next level. With this vision in mind, Geek Fam came to life, pushing the boundaries of esports and making its way towards becoming a leading esports company in Asia. A venture that I am particularly proud of. Geek Fam was built organically from the ground up without taking on any external funding. In its time, Geek Fam has garnered several awards, including the SME 100 Award for fastest growing brand in Southeast Asia and the Most Engaging Esports Club by the Asia Halal Brand Awards 2020.
With successfully establishing Geek Fam in the esports industry through renowned teams in multiple games, I later went on to establish Geek Events. I noticed a gap in the market for gaming events, leading me to take that opportunity to establish Geek Events. Offering a team dedicated to organising large scale esports and gaming events, Geek Events rose to South East Asia’s leading esports tournament and event organisers with a presence in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Philippines.

The Early Years
1992
School Years
It’s quite a funny story. When I was a boy in primary one, my brother made this drawing of a popular television series at the time, Robotech, if you’re familiar. I took this drawing to school and showed it to my new friend, she liked the drawing and was rather impressed by it. You could say that in that moment I saw an opportunity and took it. In full entrepreneurial spirit, I sold her my brother's drawing for S$8 and that was the first profit I have ever made. My brother never noticed it was gone and I was S$8 richer.
During my school days, I resided in Johor Bahru but commuted daily to Singapore where I attended school. We all know how expensive Singapore can be and even as a young boy I was familiar with the concept. However, I never let a good opportunity slip by me. As kids, we would buy erasers that we would use to play in fun games. These erasers were cheaper in Malaysia and so I would sell them to my classmates in Singapore for a higher price. In secondary school, I moved up to comic books amongst other things as costs were generally cheaper in Malaysia, even comparing it dollar to dollar. I became quite the rich kid and did well for myself over the course of my school years.

College Years
When it came time for college, I got accepted into a reputable junior college in Singapore. However, my parents insisted I visit Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar (KTJ) in Malaysia. KTJ is a private boarding school in Negeri Sembilan that operates under the British Curriculum; offering A-Levels from Cambridge International Examinations and Edexcel. At first glance, I didn’t want to be there. The school was in the middle of nowhere and that can be rather underwhelming for a 16 year old. However, after careful consideration, I decided it will be good to gain more self-discipline and dabble into different experiences. For my future as a businessman, I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and experience something I haven’t yet experienced; in that case it was transitioning from a normal school to a boarding school, which was something of an entirely different culture. As I mentioned before, I did quite well for myself during my school years and earned quite a fortune. At the age of 16, it would have been tough to resist temptations, so I knew staying in Singapore by myself would not have been a suitable option for me. At KTJ, I still remained true to my entrepreneurial-self, however, at large I did immerse myself into the boarding school culture and laid a lot of focus on my education as well as sports.

University Years
After I graduated from KTJ, I went to the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom (UK). When I got to the UK, I was told that the casinos could not be beaten. If there is something I enjoy more than anything; it is a good challenge. Needless to say, I accepted the challenge. I had my system and statistics in place and soon the money was rolling in. This was quite well known amongst the Nottingham students, as word got around. Soon, my friends tagged along and we collectively made winnings in 6 figures, GBP. Eventually, I stopped as I felt that I had already unlocked the achievement. It was time to move on.
Over the course of my university years, I did a lot of travelling across Europe. I got into trading rare Magic: The Gathering cards and that gave way to living quite a lavish lifestyle. I was not the most financially responsible but I guess that comes with age. I got into a bit of poker as well and managed to cash in 17 tournaments in a row.

The Era of Discovery
2008
January
Turning the clock to 2008, fresh out of university I started a company. Back then, it was a corporate team-building company wherein we would organise outdoor team building activities along with corporate training for companies. This included activities like how to set up, how to build a camp, kayaking and whitewater rafting. Back then, the concept of team building was relatively new. More and more companies were beginning to fork out money for talent retention as well as improving team chemistry.
Whilst I was doing that, I was also taking on consultation for manufacturing projects. Another achievement, amongst others that I was rather proud of, is that I managed to cut down a manufacturing process on operations from 25 hours to just 1 hour.

July
Over the years, I had people approach me asking if I had ever considered a career in insurance. It wasn’t something that I initially saw myself doing but I have always been open to new experiences that lead to learning opportunities. So, I said yes. My thought process at the time was quite simple, I study quite a bit and I have the “book smarts”. However, in business, which is what I have always wanted to be in, it's not enough to just be book smart, you also need to have the “street smarts”.
After spending a significant amount of time in Singapore and later in the UK, the influence and environment I had known was considerably different in contrast to Malaysia, which is why I have never felt ‘normal’ in Malaysia. The fact that I haven’t felt very normal under Malaysian standards, I believe was a big disadvantage for me. My objective at the time was to learn, which then contributed to my decision to go into sales. If you want to do sales, it is said that insurance sales is the toughest to do and so I did insurance sales.
Within just the first month as an insurance agent, I managed to qualify for the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), an international award that is awarded to the top 1% of the financial planning industry in the world. Worldwide, only 40,000 to 50,000 people achieve it, with 12 months to qualify for it. I managed to do it in just one month. At the end of December, I was officially recognized for the MDRT Award. At 24 years old, having made sales that entitled me to a significant amount of money, in just a month, it didn’t seem like much of a challenge. Another achievement unlocked; time to move on to the next big thing.

A month after qualifying for the MDRT, I decided to take a break and travel. While still working on my Corporate Team Building Company, I travelled through Europe and China for the next couple of months.

June
At the end of May, my unit manager at the time told me to come back and once again qualify for an MDRT in one month to prove it wasn’t just a fluke. Always up for a good challenge, on the 29th of May, I rejoined and started working on it. This time I did it exclusively through cold calls and once again managed to qualify for the MDRT in just one month.
On the 21st of June, 2010, I made the submissions and on the 23rd of June, 2010 it was approved. At the end of the financial year, 30th June, 2010, out of over 10,000 agents at Hong Leong Assurance, I managed to secure the position of 2nd runner-up, only working 2 months, while there were people who had worked 12 months. I felt as happy as that kid that studied right before an exam and got an A.
For this financial year, I won a couple of awards, I was 2nd runner-up as an overall agent, 1st runner-up as a rookie agent, President Club award, National Association of Malaysian Life Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAMLIFA) award and a few more awards.

2010
July
At the end of June 2010, my unit manager suggested I try for a fast-track promotion to become unit manager in July of 2011, which was viable due to my academic background in finance. My unit manager at the time was one of the top 5 unit managers in Hong Leong Assurance. His team did 1.8 million sales on new premium and I achieved half of those team sales. I was one person that had worked 2 months and he was already top 5. Despite the insurance industry being a fairly matured industry, I felt that maybe they aren’t quite doing it the right way. So, I told him I would go for the fast-track promotion to be promoted in July 2011, but in the meantime I wanted to train to be a unit manager, so I offered to take over his team's recruitment as well as sales training. I was lucky that he allowed me to run and implement my many 'crazy' ideas.
My logic at the time was simple, “people pay you to learn”, that’s what my father always used to tell me. If you look at it from the point of view where you think people pay you to do work, you will feel obliged to complete work, because that’s what you’re being paid to do. However, if you shift your perspective and start thinking of it as people paying you to learn, you are bound to be a lot happier because you're winning in every way. Not only will the money be rolling in but you will also be gaining in terms of knowledge.
That is why I was thrilled to be allowed to lead my unit manager’s team without compensation, as for me it was an opportunity to practice and ultimately be better equipped for when I become unit manager.
Through that period, I innovated a lot of systems and practices. Completely reinventing the culture of the whole team, I implemented a modular system, hired only full-timers as well as created a cold call system. From July of 2010 when i started running the team until June of 2011 the team did over 10 million in sales.

July
In January of 2011, six months before my promotion, I started my own office and hired a personal assistant. I did this six months before my promotion because I wanted to learn the ropes of running an office, in order to avoid slips and errors that may eventually occur. I also wanted my personal assistant to be thoroughly trained, before I officially became unit manager. In Hong Leong Assurance, after you reach a certain rank, you are allowed to start your own company, which is how LKK Wealth Management came to be.

2012
June
At the end of the financial year of June 2012, my team submitted over 14 million in sales, out of which over 12 million got approved in time for the financial year. It was recognised as the nationwide record in insurance sales. At the time, I only had 27 agents, while the last person to break the record had over 200 agents, so we made quite a name for ourselves. At this point, I had another achievement unlocked and it was time to move on to the next big thing.

July
Breaking national records at such a young age, I started gaining a lot of publicity. In June of 2012, due to multiple mainstream interviews, I was approached by private equity companies, investment companies, property development companies, unit trust companies and so on. The reason for this was quite simple: I had managed to gather a database, a highly-trained sales force and a strong management system.
I signed the highest level partnership agreement with Hwang Investment Bank to sell their unit trust. I further signed an agreement with Kenanga Investment Bank to carry their stock brokering product.
I signed on with a few property developers as well. We did property projects for them, such as marketing, sales and events that even extended to foreign tours. The tours were set up all across Asia, from cities like Singapore, Jakarta to Hong Kong. In these projects we would handle everything from A to Z, wherein we would send out a sales team to go to hotels and set up conventions. We further took care of the invitations, models of the properties, brochures amongst a couple of other things. Through these projects we would earn hefty commissions.
Taking a step further, I signed a deal with OCBC bank to do their mortgage loans. When I sold a property, as a one-stop solution for our clients, we would handle their mortgage loans. Working with favoured law firms, through establishing solid relationships, we were able to streamline the process and exponentially reduce hassle for our clients. So basically, after selling a property, as a value added service we would help our clients do their mortgage loans through a friendly panel law firm.

The Aligned Path
2014
At this point, I was young, I had a lot of money and I was worried I may be going down the wrong path. I felt I was losing control in a way and I was losing myself a little bit. Keep in mind that I was only 28 at this point, for a guy that’s earning such a significant amount, that really isn’t the oldest of ages. I had a lot of people circling me, from property developers to banks and it became too much at some point.
This is when I took a slight step back from the insurance industry. I do believe it's a beneficial industry for someone that wants to build capital to start something, but due to the amount of success I had, its fair share of drawbacks like being too comfortable came along too. I considered this unhealthy as this was only the start of my 30-40 years of business life. I do believe it does good for people which is why I am still involved in the industry to this day. However, I learnt what I needed to learn, so I decided to move further and explore other areas. So, I took my foot slightly off the peddle in order to think about what I really wanted to do.

The Now
2016

In July of 2016, I founded Cause Effect. I taught myself everything there was to know about digital and implemented certain practices into the company. I put in place a vision for the company, a management system and personally trained the team.

On the 26th of November, 2016, Geek Fam was founded. I am proud of this venture as it was grown organically without taking on any external funding. Geek Fam has in its time continuously pushed the boundaries of esports and has made its way towards becoming a leading esports company in Southeast Asia.
After establishing Geek Fam in the esports industry, I noticed there was a gap in the market when it came to gaming events. With this vision in mind, I took the opportunity to establish Geek Events. Geek Events rose to become South East Asia's leading esports tournament and event organisers with a presence in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Philippines.

2020
May
The year of 2020 was a tough one, with the cloud of the global pandemic looming over us. Pre-covid, I was catching over 7 flights a month and it was an incredibly big change to no longer be able to do that. However, despite the pandemic I did manage to usher in some big achievements.
In May of 2020, Cause Effect partnered with another award-winning agency, SocialGrooves.com. This led to the inception of Digitally.Asia Group; a modern-day digital ally that serves as a one-stop avenue towards solving digital needs in Asia.

October
Geek Events has also seen significant growth in 2020, I signed on to be the event partners of Esports Integrated, ESI, an agency of Kementerian Belia and Sukan (Ministry of Youth and Sports in Malaysia), to launch the Official Malaysia Esports Championship, and Malaysia Esports Industry Conference.
Geek events is now one of the largest esports event organisers in Southeast Asia. As the main event organisers for PUBG APAC 2020, shifting three regional offline events to online events and coordinating with 8 different countries, we handled the respective national tournaments and then the regional championships, for a total prize pool of $863,500 USD. Geek Events further went on to organise, Garena’s Free Fire Malaysia Solos, Tri-Nation Cup, Continental Series: Asia, for a total prize pool of $350,000 USD, as well as the PUBG Mobile Dew Challenge (Mountain Dew, PepsiCo) for a prize pool of RM 200,000. We integrated QR codes into Mountain Dew bottle caps for registration and brand activation. Being selected by World-Class game developers (PUBG Corporation and Garena) to organise their official events, the prize pool is a key indicator of the prestige of the tournaments we produce.
We managed all these events from A to Z; from developing the website, conceptualising, marketing, tournament administration, brand activation, talent management, live event production, broadcasting to sponsorship hunting. Hosting approximately 70,000+ participants across all our events, I am immensely proud of my team and their dedication that resulted in such incredible achievements.
We further started Geek Talents in Indonesia and in the midst of the pandemic we have managed to groom our influencers to see triple the growth through brands recognising our keen eye for brand activation, which was possible due to years of experience with Cause Effect.

2020
December
Times change quickly, which means we have to adapt quicker. Despite a rough year, I managed to come out stronger. Through creating an atmosphere of mutual support and respect as well as a management team that is constantly involved and dedicated in producing the best strategies, I was able to win 3 awards in the year of 2020; the SME100 for Fast Moving Companies (Cause Effect), Top 100 Most Influential Young Entrepreneur, and Halal Brand Award for Most Engaging Esports Club (K&K Revolution).
I further went on to produce the No. 1 insurance agent from my financial sales team, Rise Advisory, ManuLife, who managed to achieve the prestigious title COT (Court of Table, 3x of MDRT), in 5 months rather than the standard 12 months.
